Biography

Born 9 Oct 1733 in Ridgefield Connecticut to Nathan and Hannah St. John[1][2]

Although the St John Genealogy suggests that Sarah, daughter of Nathan and Hannah, married James Green,[3], subsequent research supports that this was another Sarah (St. John) Green (abt.1750-).

That Sarah, daughter of Nathan, married Nehemiah Stebbins, is supported by the following:

  • while still single, Sarah received a bequest from her fathers will of a piece of land.[4]
  • this same piece of land was later sold by Nehemiah Stebbins and his wife Sarah.[5]
  • the age at death of Sarah, wife of Nehemiah Stebbins corresponds with the birth of Sarah, daughter of Nathan St John.[6]

Although The Stebbins Genealogy suggests that Sarah Jessup married Nehemiah Stebbins, it is suggested this was because their son Samuel named a son Benjamin Jessup Stebbins. Instead, Samuel Stebbins had a first cousin named Benjamin Jessup, which was the inspiration for his son's name.[7]

Jessup-671 and St. John-876 appear to represent the same person because: Proof found that she was St John and dau of Nathan, not maiden name Jessup. Thank you.

Whitney, do you have access to americanancestors.org? There's an article from The American Genealogist that proves that Sarah, dau of Nathan, was married to Nehemiah Stebbins, and that it was some other Sarah St John who married James Green. see:

I can not access that article. Feel free to make the improvements clarifying the discrepancies from The St. John Genealogy.

Regarding Sarah Jessup. See Article in The American Genealogist vol 33 pgs 100-103 which gives evidence that she is actually Sarah St John daughter of Nathan and Hannah (Seymore) St John. It was researched and written by Donald Jacobus.
